The Junior League of the Shoals brings apples to Florence on the first Friday of November as part of their yearly fundraiser.
The 82nd official Apple Annie Day fell on Friday. The Junior League organizes volunteer camps at grocery shops where they sell apples to raise money for the various programs that they work on all year long. For instance, according to volunteer Kattie Young, the Children's Museum of the Shoals' outdoor classroom was made possible in part by the proceeds from the Apple Annie Day fundraiser. According to Young, the league organizes a community service event at least once a month.
"We made socks for our homeless community this past month," Young clarified. "Anybody who required socks."
We started using those items because we had completed period products for our school-age children the month prior. For students in the neighborhood who might not have a costume for Halloween, we also made outfits.
The group pre-sold apples valued at more than $4,000. Staking out at stores on Friday, they raised almost $3,000 in Apple sales.
