Though the holidays are quickly approaching, several Buffalo food banks require replenishing their supplies to ensure that the community's needs are met.
One of the many Buffalo churches serving the Fruit Belt region is Greater Refuge Temple Church, which finds it difficult to balance the demand and supply for food donations.
"We require turkeys." Leonard Marshall, an assistant pastor at Greater Refuge Temple Church, said, "We're asking for turkeys." "And we've noticed an increase in the number of migrants and asylum seekers in addition to our regular community members who need food, and nobody wants to go hungry during the holidays."
Branden Foster, the church pantry coordinator, demonstrated the abundance of food in the pantry to 7 News reporter Yoselin Person.
He claims that it is insufficient to feed everyone who visits each week.
"The number of people we serviced has doubled now; on an average week at this time last year, we were probably looking at 150 to 200 people," says Foster.
According to FeedMore WNY, they fed 197,500 people in Western New York last year.
According to Catherine Shick, public relations manager at FeedMore WNY, "when you dig into those numbers on who we serve we especially saw an increase in the number of children who are relying on our food bank distribution networks of agencies."
Greater Refuge Temple Church is one of the 400 hunger relief partners that this organization serves in the interim.
According to Shick, "the community is in dire need, and overall food donations are down." Therefore, we urge people to participate. You may organize a food drive.
Along with the broader East Side neighborhood, members of the Greater Refuge Temple Church on Jefferson Avenue aim to continue helping refugees.
"They require help. They are parents. Their language barrier exists. Kids are starving. They're not dressed appropriately," remarks Marshall. "And I think the Fruitbelt is the kind of community that will come together and take care of its residents' needs."
