Jane Vatcher was intrigued when she heard the woman who she had seen about the building whistling in the foyer.
Jane observes, "She's always so optimistic and I'm not always optimistic." "I wondered if she has a secret that I should know,"
Jane agreed when Margaret Spark stopped whistling and started asking her to the music room of their condo complex for a sing-along.
Jane says with a smile, "It was my first time there. And we enjoyed ourselves greatly.
Because the neighbors got along so well, Jane quickly discovered the source of Margaret's unwavering optimism.
"You can choose to be happy or sad," Margaret explains. I've never been the 'poor me' kind, either.
But that was put to the test at a young age when Margaret's husband unexpectedly passed away, leaving her to care for three small girls and take night school to improve her employment prospects.
The girls were taken care of in the evenings by a friendly neighbor, according to Margaret. "So that I could study all day and be at home with the girls."
Margaret has continued to be a lovely neighbor ever since.
Margaret replies, "I recall when people were nice to me. I want to see that on other people's faces.
Because of this, Margaret often leaves thoughtful notes and presents at people's doorsteps to surprise them when she's not baking fresh scones and bringing them to neighbors on all 21 levels of their building.
Margaret always smiles, according to a neighbor.
Another neighbor chuckles, "Seeing Margaret lifts your spirits."
Another says, "She's worth her weight in gold."
Margret travels up and down the elevator to check on neighbors who need round-the-clock medical attention, visit pets whose owners are away, and provide daily hugs to others who have recently lost a loved one, all to the cheerful accompaniment of whistling.
Jane says with a smile, "She just lights up any place she visits. And she makes the world shine.
And Jane has discovered, and Margaret concurs, that the "secret" to her enduring delight is just concentrating on being good to others.
Just do it," advises Margaret, beaming. And thereafter, you'll feel wonderful.
