Sunderland man awarded car through Vermont-based nonprofit

Cool Story - Sunderland man awarded car through Vermont-based nonprofit

Qu Za, a resident of Sunderland, suffered a stroke in March 2019, leaving him without a job or a reliable route to commute to work.

Za, 40, was referred to the New England charity Good News Garage by the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission as he works to regain strength in his right arm and leg. Following his involvement with the group, Za was given a 2014 Subaru Impreza that will enable him to get to the gym, where he may gradually regain his strength and find employment once more.

"I can go to the gym because I have a car," Za remarked. It's amazing, and I value my ability to drive a lot.

Families or people in need in Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont have access to affordable and dependable transportation options thanks to the Burlington, Vermont-based nonprofit Good News Garage. Since its establishment in 1996, the organization has assisted car donors in donating more than 5,500 vehicles to nearby residents in need.

Car beneficiaries in Massachusetts work with the Massachusetts Rehabilitation Commission and must, among other requirements, be employed or have a written plan for employment.

Za claimed to have relocated from Tibet to the Pioneer Valley around 12 years ago and had been steadily employed at the University of Massachusetts Amherst in the janitorial and food services departments. But, the stroke prevented him from working.

He intends to continue working with the Rehabilitation Commission to find a job as a food delivery driver with the help of his new car, which he claimed has been fantastic in the winter weather.

My strength is weak right now, he admitted. Yet this car is very fun to drive. Without this assistance, I would be powerless.

In addition to the already high barrier to having a car, Good News Garage said that a national automobile shortage is driving those prices even higher, frequently prohibiting low-income people from owning cars. The group also pointed out that while used car demand has increased, contribution levels have fallen.

Director of Operations Cash Cranson stated in a statement that although we can't end the automobile scarcity, we can surely assist some of the people who are suffering the most. "Unfortunately, the quantity of car donations we receive restricts how much we can do to assist. Deciding to donate your car during this trying time is a selfless act of compassion that has a profound, immediate impact.”
