Millions have been devastated by the earthquakes that occurred on February 6 in northern Syria and southeast Turkey. On the instruction of President Biden, the United States rapidly activated federal agencies and partners to urgently offer life-saving assistance in close collaboration with our Turkish Allies and partner groups in Syria. This was done within hours of the first earthquake.
Hundreds of additional U.S. personnel have entered the area since Monday to support the good work of our Embassy and Consulate teams to help save lives and provide aid to those in need. The United States just announced $85 million in immediate humanitarian aid to help with these initiatives. In southern Turkey, the Disaster Assistance and Response Team of USAID is already hard at work.
In Adiyaman, one of the hardest devastated regions, two of their best-trained Urban Search and Rescue Teams are assisting Turkish rescue efforts. For search and rescue missions, these teams are equipped with specialized tools and canines. Emergency managers, specialists in hazardous materials, engineers, logisticians, paramedics, and planners will also be present.
Both Turkey and Syria, their current humanitarian partners are delivering vital emergency aid, including food, water, shelter, medical attention, and support personnel for search and rescue operations. U.S. helicopters are engaged in airlift operations, delivering rescue workers to the locations where they are most needed.
The United States appreciates the Turkish government's decision to reopen the border so that relief can reach northwest Syria, and they are pleased to learn that the first UN aid convoy has arrived at the Bab al-Hawa gate. They demand that the Assad government immediately permit help to enter through all border crossings, provide relief to be distributed to all impacted areas, and permit humanitarian access to every single person in need in Syria.
The United States will continue to be dedicated to doing whatever it takes, for whatever long it takes, to help those affected by these earthquakes in both Turkey and Syria. The people of Turkey and Syria will continue to receive support from the United States, and we welcome and encourage support from our international partners in this time of great need.
