According to research, doing good deeds may be especially beneficial to persons experiencing symptoms of sadness or anxiety. This is true both figuratively and literally.
There is no denying that doing good things can make us feel good, but new research from Ohio State University suggests that those who are experiencing depression or anxiety symptoms may benefit the most from doing good deeds.
"One of the elements of life that are most closely linked to well-being is social interaction. One of the most effective methods to foster those ties seems to be by performing acts of kindness, "David Cregg, a research co-author, stated.
Jennifer Cheavens, a psychology professor, continued, "We frequently believe that people who are depressed already have a lot to deal with and shouldn't be asked to take on additional responsibility. These outcomes, however, contradict that. People with melancholy and anxiety may find that being kind to others and attending to their needs makes them feel better about themselves."
Over 120 individuals with mild to moderate symptoms of depression, anxiety and stress were examined for the study. The third group was told to carry out three acts of kindness every day for two days out of the week, while the other two groups were given strategies frequently used in cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT).
These included offering to drive someone, writing notes for housemates, and baking cookies for pals.
The researchers discovered that after 10 weeks, participants in all three groups displayed an improvement in life satisfaction and a decrease in depressive and agitation symptoms. "These findings are upbeat because they imply that each of the three study strategies is successful in lowering distress and raising satisfaction. But by fostering a sense of connection with others, a crucial component of wellbeing, acts of kindness still outperformed both social interactions and cognitive reappraisal "Cregg stated.
The Journal of Positive Psychology has released a complete report of the study's findings.
